About Us
Northern California's Hydroponics Store And Indoor Growing Supply - Shasta County - California
Northern Roots is the first locally owned and operated hydroponics store in Redding, Ca. Northern Roots started in a 944 sq. ft. building with one employee, the founder, Jon Knight.
Jon, has always been interested gardening and worked with his mom in Fortuna, Ca. As he grew, so did his passion for growing and harvesting plants. Jon and his family moved to Redding, Ca. and Jon had saved his money in hopes of investing it something good someday.
Jon said, "Horticulture was the only thing he knew enough about and loved enough to start a career with." When he was 26, he opened his first shop in a small building and worked everyday by himself.

Six months after opening, Jon added Allen Bonnette to his crew. Allen would come to Northern Roots and hang out for hours, listening and learning about the horticulture business. He showed a true passion for plants. Soon, Allen became a full time employee and worked his way up to manager. He still manages the store to this day.

After one year of Northern Roots running successfully, Jon's best friend, Franco Flores, inquired with him about opening his own store. Jon was supportive and began looking at areas out of town for Franco to open a horticulture store. Eventually, Jon asked Franco to partner with him and expand on the good thing he had going already with the store in Redding. It proved to be a wise decision.
After they partnered, they expanded to a 2400 sq. ft. building in south Redding in 2007 and outgrew that store in one year. They then moved to a 5200 sq. ft. building and have been there ever since.

In 2009, they opened a 3700 sq. ft. building in Anderson, California. Today, Northern Roots has proved its success with two stores and eight employees. Which are: Allen, Jeremy, Abe , Shaun, Jake, Ben and Larry.
Jon considers the people who work for him partners, not employees. Northern Roots also believes in supporting local products and manufactures as much as possible.

The summer of 2011, the decision was made to add an online store to Northern Roots and to provide customers with more information and assistance and expand their service to more rural areas. We are currently working to improve, and add to our online store. So we can provide hydroponics supplies to Shasta County, Siskiyou County, Trinity County, Lassen County Tehama County and other areas of Northern California.
